Remy Zero was an awesome band. Even if you don’t know the name, you more than likely heard some of their songs. You see, I wasn’t the only one out there that thought these fellers where good, Hollywood loved the shit out of them and used their music in countless TV shows, movies, and commercials. So like I said, you’ve probably heard them at least once even though you never knew it.
The story is that before then had ever recorded a proper album, Radiohead heard the band’s demo tape and liked it so much, Radiohead invited Remy Zero to open for them on a national tour. Not bad for your first tour, eh?
But that story really illustrates the life of Remy Zero. Loved by the entertainment industry, the band never really took off with average radio listener. Sure they had a respectably large and dedicated fan base but that only goes so far when you are trying to make a living. Outside of California, the band was limited to opening slots or headlining small clubs – well below the attention and recognition they deserved because they fucking kicked-ass.
Remy Zero is responsible for one of the greatest concerts I’ve ever seen. Not because of anything flashy or theatrical… they just sounded amazing live. Their songs would push you and pull from side to side whether you wanted to go or not. Those of you that did get to see Remy Zero perform live can back me up on that.
The band was pretty much a straight forward rock band, and a really good one at that. They didn’t go for any of the bullshit attitude or “flair” that infected a lot of their peers. They chose instead to concentrate on just making great songs.
After three albums, Remy Zero broke up. But before they did, they had their music in the TV show “Smallville,” the films “Suicide Kings” and “Garden State” to name just a few. Again, pretty impressive for a band no one ever really listened to.
So go check them out. I know you have an iTunes account so just load it up and sample a couple of the songs. I suggest starting with the album Villa Elaine and moving on from there.
If you don’t like them you are a communist.
