Sound Team’s name is, or was, no misnomer. The band was a team that produced one hell of a sound. Consisting of six (and sometimes more) musicians, Sound Team, produced a full bodied sound that was unmistakably “indie” in origin – blending several different influences into a single, sometimes muddled, wall of sound. But most of all, they were good.
Sound Team’s story isn’t unlike many other “flash in the pan” storylines from the rock ‘n roll graveyard. They developed a large following in their home town (Austin, of course), caught the eye of a Capital Records, produced a pretty damn good (major label) debut album, opened for a number of big bands and then self destructed. Happens all the time and it happened to Sound Team.
Riding a steady and groove laden rhythm section, Sound Team built hook-centic track after hook-centric track. While this approach itself wasn’t anything new or even that exciting, the songs were undeniably infectious thanks to the sheer power of the band’s sound. No where is that more evident than on the track “Your Eyes Are Liars” from the band’s Move Monster album.
While the band members have all moved on and Sound Team has officially been buried they can at least be proud that they released one of my favorite albums of 2006 and star in one of the most memorable Take Away Shows as the performed in the middle of a protest rally. And that last bit is saying something because the Take Away Shows are almost all incredible.
