Oh boy… this week’s bout is a good one. The idea came in from Twitter and I must say that it’s one of my favorites so far. The suggestion suggested featuring songs about sex since college has started and that means a whole lot of sex is happening on every college campus all over this country.

Awesome. College is awesome. Sex is awesome. The first semester of college with a ton of awkward, apologetic, drunken sex is awesome. I think. It’s been a while for me since then and I vaguely remember it being awesome. Mostly awkward but still awesome.

Anywho… this week we have two awesome videos about sex: Bell Biv DeVoe versus Salt-n-Pepa. You pick the winner so go watch and vote.

This week’s bout idea didn’t come from Twitter. We got a lot of really good ideas from Twitter (which we will use next week) but this week the idea came from within the Music Boxer team. For the last month (and for the next month or so) the Music Boxer staff has been in transit. In the last two weeks alone staffers have been in racked up thousands of miles on planes and cars and hikes and bikes and everything else. Summer, I guess. And since we are all traveling so much, someone suggested we do a couple songs about flying (since we were in the Chicago airport at the time). Sounded like a great idea. So this week we have two songs about (very loosely) flying. I wanted to use a couple other ones but when I looked I discovered that we’d already run the ones I wanted to use.

Anywho, this week we have Goldfrapp versus Ben Folds. Whoo-hoo!

This week’s bout comes from a Twitter suggestion. That suggestion read like this:

“do punk!!!!!!!”

So OK, we’ll do some punk. Seeing as how Warped Tour ended yesterday this suggestion seemed topical. I guess it would have been more topical back when the Warped Tour kicked off but… whatever. We can’t keep track of everything.

This week we have two punk legends: Face to Face and Social Distortion. Growing up in the 90s punk scene both these bands hold a special place in my heart. I’ve seen both in concert about 100 times (mild exaggeration). I’m not bragging, I’m just sayin’.

When I sat down and started thinking about what to run for this week’s bout I realized it has been awhile since we’ve had a bout with some kick-ass 80’s arena rock. So, naturally, I decided to but together a video bout of two 80’s arena rock bands. And when I thought about which videos we should feature I immediately thought of these two videos. I fucking love these videos. They are perfect 80’s videos. Perfect! That fuckin’ air keyboard shit at the beginning of the Journey video? There is nothing in life better than watching that shit.

So yeah, enjoy this week’s bout featuring Journey’s “Separate Ways” versus Toto’s “Africa.”

For this week’s bout we’ve pit two of the biggest names in alternative rock against each other. Why? Well, they both have album coming out (one tomorrow and one next month) and… well, because. Do we need a reason to run two bands against each other? No, we don’t. That’s what we do here. That’s part of the mission statement. I think. We never really go around to writing the mission statement.

Anywho, we have Interpol versus Arcade Fire. Whew! What a match. Unfortunately we had to use a video from Arcade Fire’s last album because they haven’t released a video for any of the new songs yet. Jerks.
