Snow Patrol may not seem like a natural selection to kick off today’s Friday Dance party but you are gonna have to trust me here. This song has the word “dance” in it! How can that not be appropriate for Friday Dance Party? And this video features people dancing. Again, how can this not be perfect for Friday Dance Party.
I know that hatin’ on Snow Play is the modus operandi for most music bloggers but I’m just come right out and say that I kinda like ‘em. That’s the other reason I’m including this video in today’s Friday Dance Party.
So dance to this.
Snow Patrol’s “In the End” video:
I gotta say, I like the song. So go ahead and strip my music snob/blogging credentials.

Another day, another round of U2 covers from the Q Magazine thingy they are doing. Today we have three more covers this time from Nine Inch Nails, Snow Patrol and Garbage.
First up is the Nine Inch Nails version of “Zoo Station.” As far as NIN stuff goes, this is pretty laid back. In fact, if it wasn’t labeled as “Nine Inch Nails” I would never had guessed who this was. This cover, like a couple of the other we’ve heard so far, doesn’t really stray too far from the source material. But check it out:
Nine Inch Nails’ “Zoo station:”
Next up is Snow Patrol’s version of “Mysterious Ways.” Um… I’m not real sure what to say about this one other then Snow Patrol turns it down a notch. At the end the whole band comes in a bit but for the most part this version is just Gary Lightbody and some effects. Check it:
Snow Patrol’s “Mysterious Ways:”
OK, is it me or are all of these songs starting to sound the same (except maybe Jack White’s cover)? Did they all have a meeting and decide to shot a ton of heroin before recording each song? Holy shit. The original isn’t this devoid of life. Here’s Garbage’s version of “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses” which is barely interesting enough to keep me awake this morning.
Garbage’s “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses:”
Maybe tomorrow we’ll get a better round of tracks.

Apparently Snow Patrol has a new album. I would file that under the “good news” bucket because I genuinely like Snow Patrol. Less so their last album but hey, we can’t expect a band to be 100% all the time. Even the Beatles had a couple misses. But the new album is good news especially since I wasn’t really expecting one for a little while yet. Lead singer Gary Lightbody has been off doing a bunch of other projects and I didn’t realize he was ready to get back to Snow Patrol. So, yeah… cool.
In advance of the new album, Snow Patrol has released a new single. Sweet. The song is titled “Called Out In The Dark” and it’s… um… uh. It’s not very good. I’m still excited to hear the new album but this song seems very… Coldplay. And I’m not talking about good, old Coldplay, I’m talking about new, disco-y Coldplay that isn’t very good. There are a lot (as in way too much) of keyboards happening here. But check it out:
Here’s hoping that the new album doesn’t sound ANYTHING like this. The new album, Fallen Empires_, comes out in September.

I know we did the same type of “theme” last week but… I don’t care. I don’t care because this is the week of the Brass Bells Society show in Phoenix. And since I am in the Brass Bells Society I am excited as hell about the show. So back off!
But, since last week we did songs all about Superman I figured we should even the score up a little bit and do a couple Marvel Superheroes. And since Marvel movies tend to have really obnoxious soundtracks, what better way to celebrate our (likely obnoxious) comedy show than with a video bout with videos from a couple of those recent movies.
So we have a song from AC/DC from “Iron Man 2” and a song from Snow Patrol from the movie “Spiderman 3”.
Go, watch and vote!
Last week’s winner, Crash Test Dummies (really?), has been sent to the winner’s circle.

Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) and Peter Buck’s (R.E.M.) side project, Tired Pony, is finally ready to release the band’s debut album, The Place We Ran From, next week. Finally! We’ve only been hearing about this thing for, like… ever. We have literally been hearing about this project since the beginning of time. OK, that’s obviously not true but we have literally been hearing about this project for months.
While we haven’t heard too much from the album we have heard bits and pieces. I’m digging what I’ve heard so far but I will reserve full judgement until I get my hands on the full album… which will be next week. Unless some awesome label person reads this and sends me the album early! ‘Cus that would be cool. Just sayin’.
Anywho, check out this performance by Tired Pony of the song “Get On the Road” from Spin.com:
I guess the album track will feature Zooey Deschanel. Neat?

Does Gary Lightbody (lead singer of Snow Patrol) have Jack White Syndrome? It seems the dude is all over the place creating side project after side project. Whatever… we like Gary Lightbody so it’s not a big deal, we just don’t want him to get super exhausted and get addicted to drugs. Because that’s how you get addicted to drugs – starting a shit ton of bands and always having something to do. Ask Courtney Love. She knows what I’m talking about.
Anywho… Mr. Lightbody has teamed up with Peter Buck (yes, that Peter Buck) to form an “alt-country” band named The Tired Pony. Sure, whatever. Today we have our first listen/look at the output from this (dynamic?) duo.
Check out the video for “Dead American Writers:”
Hmmm… other than the slide guitar, I’m not really feeling the “alt-country” thing. Whatever. I like the song so whatever. That’s all I’m saying. Whatever.
The Dead Pony (who in addition to Lightbody and Buck, includes Richard Colburn, Iain Archer, Jacknife Lee, Scott McCaughey and Troy Stewart with appearances by Zooey Deschanel, M. Ward, and Tom Smith) will have a new album hitting the US interwebs in September. If you live in other places you can get it earlier. Click here to head to the band’s official webpage.
