We Are Scientists
Brain Thrust Mastery

Listening to We Are Scientists new album, Brain Thrust Mastery, made me relive every crappy relationship I’ve been in. I started off optimistic and up-beat, then angry and confused, and finally depressingly inadequate by the end.

The familiar sounds of Brain Thurst Mastery are comforting at first, reminiscent of synth-pop they play at the grocery store and cheesy dance clubs. But the warmth brought about by familiarity dissipates when you try to make out the whiny, rushed, and over-processed vocals.

At first, lyrics like “We all recognize I’m the problem here,” and “I realize that I’m naturally inclined to let you down,” made me worry about Keith Murray & Chris Cain’s self-esteem. But listening closer, I realized it’s not that they hate themselves, they suck at relationships.

Song after song is a synth-laden, rock-pop ballad about dysfunctional or ending relationships. And while the music is up-beat enough to make you dance and bop in your chair, the largely un-original and un-insightful lyrics make the album hard to listen to closely.

The bottom line is that if you’re looking for a confusing and depressing mix of The Killers, They Might Be Giants, and Wham, Brain Thrust Mastery is for you.
